Steve Buckingham (record producer)
Steve Buckingham is an American record producer, and four-time Grammy winner with 27 number one singles to his credit. He has been awarded 11 Platinum and 19 Gold albums. He has produced Top Ten singles on eleven different charts: Pop, country, rhythm and blues, jazz, adult contemporary, Americana, bluegrass, Christian, Hispanic, triple A and dance.
Career
Among the varied artists he has worked with[1] are Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Tammy Wynette, The Chieftains, Sinéad O'Connor, Bettye LaVette, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Mindy Smith, Melissa Manchester, Ricky Skaggs, Dionne Warwick, Shania Twain, Maria McKee, Brenda Lee, Ricky Van Shelton, Joan Osborne, Shana Morrison, Loretta Lynn, jazz artists Kirk Whalum, Diane Schuur and Martin Taylor and many others. Guest artists on his projects have included Alison Krauss, Don Henley, Van Morrison, John Hiatt, Norah Jones, Shelby Lynne, Nickel Creek, Patty Griffin, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Nanci Griffith, Bela Fleck, Tower Of Power, Allison Moorer, John Popper, Rosanne Cash, Merle Haggard, Altan, Greg Allman, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Kim Carnes, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, The Winans, Patty Loveless, Larry Carlton, Isaac Hayes, Del McCoury, Chet Atkins, Martina McBride, Buddy & Julie Miller, Emmylou Harris and countless others. Steve has also produced music for six motion pictures as well as two CBS television specials.
The first record Steve produced, Alicia Bridges' "I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round)," became a worldwide hit in 1978. Steve’s professional relationship with Dolly Parton dates back to 1990. In 2001 and 2002, the two of them received Grammys for Dolly’s “return to her roots” albums, “The Grass Is Blue” and “Little Sparrow.”
In 2003, he signed and produced Mindy Smith’s debut CD, ”One Moment More” and the follow-up, “Long Island Shores.” Steve also produced Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy’s Grammy nominated album, “Adieu False Heart.”
His relationship with the legendary Levon Helm and producer, Larry Campbell, brought the artist to Vanguard Records and resulted in the 2007 Grammy winning album, “Dirt Farmer.”
All Music Guide lists over 200 albums to his credit as a producer.
For ten years Buckingham[2] was the Vice-president of A&R and staff producer for Columbia Records. He served for eleven years as Senior Vice-president of A&R and producer for Vanguard and Sugar Hill Records.
Today
In addition Steve is a musical historian. He created the college course: RHYTHM AND BLUES TORE DOWN THE WALLS OF SEGREGATION. He has taught this course at The University of Richmond (VA) and is currently teaching at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music.
