Steffon Armitage (born 20 September 1985 in San Fernando, Trinidad) is a rugby union player for RC Toulon in the Top 14.

Career

Armitage plays as a No. 8. He is known for his strength, speed and his effectiveness in ruck turnovers.

He grew up in the south of France, where he and his brothers played for Rugby Nice Côte d'Azur Université-Racing.

He was a member of the England Saxons squad that won the 2008 Churchill Cup.[1] On 1 July 2008 he was again selected for the England Saxons squad.[2]

He was called up for the England elite squad ahead of the 2009 Six Nations Championship to replace the injured Lewis Moody,[3] making his full international debut against Italy in the opening game.[4] He started both matches in England's drawn two test series against Argentina in June 2009.[5]

In July 2012, Armitage was provisionally suspended for abnormal drug test results.[6] Nonetheless, Steffon could play all the games of the new season with Toulon, both in Top 14 and H Cup. In November, Armitage was cleared of the doping charge.[7] 19 November, Armitage was designated as best foreign player by the Oscars of Midi Olympique (French Rugby Newspaper) playing for his first season in France 27 matches, 4 times only as substitute and scoring 7 tries.[8][9] In May 2013 he played as a replacement as Toulon won the 2013 Heineken Cup Final by 16–15 against Clermont Auvergne.[10]

On 26 May 2014, it was announced that he had been named 2013–14 ERC European Player of the Year.[11][12]
