Summary
Kids and many adults seemed to love watching anything that contained grand space battles when this game was first released to an exclusively North American market. Star Wars and its sequels are the most obvious to come to mind but there was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and shows like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Similar games to this were: Star Raiders, The Earth Dies Screaming and Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator.
In Star Voyager, the player has to save the Capital Starport (although the player never sees it in the game).[2] A two-player mode allows two people to become either the Star Voyager or the enemy fleet.[2] The commander of the Star Voyager has the ability to use photon torpedoes or a laser beam in order to stop the enemy.[2] Star portals play a role in transporting the Star Voyager into another part of the galaxy.[2]
The game doesn't use the maps, shields, or damage indicators found in today's space shooters. The emphasis is shooting enemy ships as fast as the player can.[3] The game ends when the player dies or when he runs out of energy.[3] While containing minimal graphics, the colors are bright and the explosions were the most impressive for an Atari 2600 video game.[3] There are also two difficulty levels: easy and hard.[3]
