Stanley Ntagali (born in 1955) is an Ugandan Anglican Archbishop. He is the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda. He was elected by secret ballot by all the 34 bishops of the Church of Uganda, on 22 June 2011. He was consecrated on 16 December 2012 at St. Paul’s Cathedral at Namirembe.[1][2] Ntagali is married to Beatrice Ntagali since 1978, and they are the parents of five children.[3]
Background
Ntagali was born in what was then known as Kigezi District in 1955. At age 16, he migrated to Hoima in the Hoima District of Bunyoro, a place he has called home since.
Education
Ntagali holds the degree of Bachelor of Divinity, obtained from St. Paul's University in Limuru, Kenya, in 1993. He also holds the degree of Master of Arts (MA) in theology from Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in the United Kingdom, in 1999.[4]
Ministry
Ntagali began his pastoral ministry as a youth worker in Wambabya Parish in the Diocese of Bunyoro-Kitara at the age of 19. In 1977, at age 22, Bishop Eustace Ruhindi commissioned him, along with a few other people, to work in Karamoja. Ntagali was ordained as a priest in the Church of Uganda in 1981. He then served as the Archdeacon of Masindi from 1993 to 1999.
Ntagali served as diocesan secretary at the Church of Uganda headquarters in Kampala, from 2000 to 2003. In 2003 he became the provincial administrator of the national church. During this time, he was intimately involved in organizing the consecration as Archbishop of Henry Luke Orombi in 2004. On 19 December 2004, Ntagali was consecrated as the first bishop of the newly created pastoral diocese of Masindi-Kitara by Archbishop Orombi. Ntagali was also the first bishop who Orombi consecrated. He served in that capacity until his election as Archbishop of Uganda on 22 June 2011. He was elected by secret ballot by all the 34 bishops of the Church of Uganda, on 22 June 2011. He was consecrated on 16 December 2012 at St. Paul's Cathedral in Namirembe.[5]
Overview
In addition to serving as the Archbishop of Uganda, Ntagali serves as bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, which is the episcopal see of the archbishop. His official position is Archbishop of Uganda and Bishop of Kampala. He replaced Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi.[6] He is a supporter of the Anglican realignment as a member of the Global South and the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans.
