Stanley High School is a high school for students aged 11 to 16 in the resort town of Southport, Merseyside in North West England. It became a designated specialist Sports College in 2003, but in 2012 it was renamed Stanley High School to celebrate the school's 60th anniversary.

Academic success

The school's examination performance has led to it receiving a School Achievement Award for three years in succession. In 2006, 73% of Year 11 students achieved the benchmark standard of five good GCSE results, up from 68% in 2005.

This performance places the school in the top 20% of English schools for value added between ages 11 and 16, and the top 10% between ages 14 and 16. Source: DfES.

In June 2006 Stanley was graded outstanding for its performance in Art and Design. The last full inspection was in 2014 when the school was judged to "Need Improvement" .[2]

Student protest about Form changes

On 20 May 2005, a number of pupils walked out of lessons to protest about form changes. This was because pupils thought that the change was too sudden, and wasn't necessary. Pupils of different years (7,8,9,10 and 11) would all be in the same registration form under these changes. They were planned to come into force immediately, but because of the scale of the protest, the headteacher decided to delay these changes by one year. The plan included pupils choosing who they would like to be in their form out of their year in mixed form groups. In September 2006, the changes were made. The pupils are now divided into 4 houses, each with their own colour; Grey-Thompson (Red), Coe (Yellow), Redgrave (Blue) and Holmes (Green). The houses are named after famous athletes.
