St. Xavier's College, Patna (often abbreviated: SXC Patna or SXC) is an undergraduate college of Arts and Commerce under Magadh University, Bodh Gaya[2] in Patna, Bihar, India. Founded in 2009, it is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Spanish Jesuit saint of the 16th century, who travelled to India. It is a co-educational self-financed Catholic minority institution, and operated by the Patna Province of the Society of Jesus.

History

The Jesuits first came to Patna in 1919, and in early 1930 was approached to set up a school in the city of Patna.[3] Fr. Loesch was to be assisted in this task by Fr. Marshall D. Moran. Fr. Loesch decided to open a Cambridge school to provide service to the people of Patna and Bihar. St. Xavier's High School, Patna was built in 1940 at Gandhi Maidan Marg. This marked the beginning of Jesuits in Patna. St. Xavier’s College, Patna was founded in 2009, by the members of Society of Jesus. In July 2009 classes began at its temporary location of St. Xavier’s College Campus (opposite St. Michael's High School, Digha). Later in June 2011, the college shifted to its permanent location on a sprawling 36 acres campus at XTTI on Digha Ashiana Road.[4]

The college was started at Patna, in the year 2009 with its first Principal Fr. T. Nishant SJ. The terms SJ stand for the Society of Jesus, an order that drew its strength largely from the United States of America, in those days. Now it is a world wide order and the missionaries have specialised in giving quality education everywhere. Their Alumni, better known as the Jesuit Alumni now number more than ten million and are to be found all around the globe.

Academics

St. Xavier's College, Patna, offers three-year undergraduate degree courses, such as Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons.) English and Economics, Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.) from Magadh University and Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and Bachelor of Computer Applications (B.C.A.)[5] from Aryabhatta Knowledge University.[6] Evaluation comprises mid-term tests and final examinations.

The College conducts at least two examinations at the end of each term. These examinations are held to evaluate the progress of students. All students will have to write and pass these examinations. Failure in these examinations will disqualify the student for the annual University examinations.[7]

Emblem

The college emblem contains the motto of the College, Pravahito Gyan Ganga Pravah (Sanskrit), translation, Let the streams of Gyan (knowledge) Ganga keep on flowing. The College is situated beside the river Ganga. Like the flowing river, the College is to ensure that the streams of Gyan keep on flowing and liberating people. This Gyan is to build bridge of understanding among peoples. The Sun with the letters IHS (first three letters for Jesus, in Greek), is a symbol characterizing the Society of Jesus. The emblem within the emblem, containing crown, crescent moon etc. is the coat of arms of the noble family of its patron, St. Francis Xavier.
