St. Mary's School I.C.S.E is a Jesuit secondary school located on Nesbit Road, Mazagaon in the city of Mumbai, India. The school is affiliated with Bombay's Church of St. Anne, which is adjacent to the school.[1]

St. Mary's is an Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) affiliate. Having been founded in the year 1864, it is also amongst the oldest, continually running, private schools in India. The School is therefore one of the most established institutions of preference for education and holistic development for children in the city.

History

The St. Mary's School I.C.S.E was founded in 1864 by members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Roman Catholic religious order founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, adjacent to St. Anne's Church, which was established 4 years before. The school began as a Catholic school of education and a military orphanage. Later, her gates were opened to the Catholic populace in general which meant the school had to expand. This lead to the construction of the building that now houses the senior school whose foundation stone was laid down by Lord Linlithgow, the former Viceroy of India from 1936 to 1943.

Currently, the school is celebrating her 150 years. Ringing in the celebrations, Zubin Mehta, an alumnus of the school, addressed the students sharing his memories at the institution. 7 December 2013 was the inauguration of this year long fest. At the event, the Chief Post Master General of India released a stamp to commemorate the school. The Governor of Maharashtra was the Chief Guest for the evening.

It used to confer the degree/diploma of a Cambridge University O level of education, and now confers the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) diploma. The school has four Gothic-style buildings and is divided into Senior School (Grades 5 and above) and Junior School (Grades 4 and below).

It is rated[2] as one of the top schools of the country. Students are encouraged in the arts and many amongst the school's alumni have flourished in theatre, music and Bollywood.

Activities

St. Mary's annually organizes and hosts 'Immaculata', an inter school fest, one of its kind from 2012. Immaculata, unlike other fests, is organized almost entirely by school students, for school students, of school students. The event is distinguished for uncanny and innovative events. St. Mary's by principle does not, and will not participate in this event, as they organize it themselves. The other fair that the school organises is the Annual School Exhibition wherein each student showcases his creativity and ingenuity in the form of science models. Students from schools around town are invited to come see the display. The school's auditorium has witnessed many thrilling acts over the years. This huge 1200-seater, whose walls are adorned with the paintings of Michelangelo, plays host to inter-house debates, the Western Music competition, the Indian music competition, the inter-house dramatics competition, elocution competitions in both Hindi and English and the inter-house quiz. Due to these activities Marians are known to have fierce yet friendly House rivalry that makes each Marian competitive but in the right spirit. The inter-house dramatics at St. Mary's have achieved wide acclaim because of their high standards.

Other extra-curricular activities include: Cubs(Scouts for Primary School children), Road Safety Patrol, Interact, Nature Club, Scouts and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Marians are avid sportsmen and are champions in games such as football. The school houses two full-size football fields, two gymnasiums and two basketball courts apart from three to four smaller playing areas for the younger children. The proportions and spacious age old architecture of this School distinguish it from all others within the city.

Additionally, the school has its own villa in Khandala, replete with lodging for the teachers and students, multiple smaller grounds, a full size football field and even a church for worship amidst the green hill slopes. The school organises regular trips here for its students to unwind and interact in an out-of-classroom atmosphere. From and out of the funds received by the school from its students and alumni the school financially supports multiple other schools and institutions for underprivileged and tribal children, many of which are based on land belonging to the school itself.
