History

The church dates from the 12th century. It was largely rebuilt in 1868 by the architect George Edmund Street. The chancel roof was decorated in 1936 by Wystan Widdows.

Originally a chapel of ease to All Saints' Church, Sawley, it became an independent parish in the 19th century.

It is a Forward in Faith parish.

The pipe organ dates from 1896 when an instrument was installed by Brindley & Foster. There were subsequent modifications to this in 1951 by Henry Willis and 1986 by the Johnson Organ Company. Details of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register.[2]
