In 2009, Giovatto secured a NEC Tournament berth with the second seed and in 2013 he won the NEC Tournament Championship with the 4th seed. Again in 2014, the Terriers won the NEC Tournament Championship and for the second year in a row participated in the NCAA Tournament.
History
The St. Francis Terriers men's soccer team was founded in 1968 and joined the Northeast Conference in 1985, cementing its soccer team in Division I. The Terriers play their home games at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Pier 5, which is also located in Brooklyn Heights. The field is located on the East River and has the Manhattan Skyline as a backdrop. The Terriers began hosting games on Pier 5 in 2013, they previously hosted home games at the Aviator Sports Complex located at Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn from 2007 to 2012.[1] Prior to 2007, the Terriers played their home games at Belson Stadium, on the St. John's University campus in Queens. The Terriers first game at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 was against the St. Peter's University Peacocks on September 13, 2013 and resulted in a 3-1 victory for the home team.[2]
From 1968 to 2014, the Terriers have compiled a 405–335–78 record and have won 3 NEC regular season championships and 6 NEC tournament championships.[3] Since joining the NEC in 1985, the Terriers have compiled a 115-106-21 record in conference play. The Terriers have also participated in seven National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournaments, their best showing came in 1978 when they made it to the Elite Eight. Since joining the NEC, the Terriers have made it to two NCAA tournaments and they have been one game away on three previous occasions ('95, '96 and '98).[4]
2013 Season
In 2013, St. Francis went on to win at least 10 games for the 4th time in 7 years under head coach Tom Giovatto and qualified for the Northeast Conference Tournament with the 4th seed for the 11th time in their history.[5] The Terriers defeated 1st seed Central Connecticut State 2–0 in the semifinals and defeated 3rd seed Bryant 3–2 in overtime for the Championship.[6] Kevin Correa was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, scoring 4 goals in the Tournament (2 against the Blue Devils and 2 against the Bulldogs).[6] With the NEC Tournament Championship, the Terriers received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and they faced Penn State in the first round on November 21, 2013, losing 0–1.
During the 2013 campaign, the St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team catapulted to 2nd in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I North Atlantic Regional Poll ranking for October 23 to October 29 after winning 7 consecutive matches.[7] For the Terriers, it is the highest they have been ranked since 2011, when they were fourth on October 4 and October 11.[7] For the final NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I North Atlantic Regional Poll of the season the Terriers were ranked 1st; this is the first time in their history being ranked 1st. The Terriers were also ranked 49th Nationally in the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI at the end of the season.[8]
After the season several Terriers received accolades; Junior forward Kevin Correa along with defender and co-captain Andy Cormack garnered All-NSCAA First Team accolades while senior forward Gabriel Bagot was named to the Second Team of the North Atlantic Region. Head coach Tom Giovatto was named North Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Kevin Correa was then named to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's All-America Third Team.
After their NEC Championship season the Terriers lost 5 starters to graduation and they're best offensive player Kevin Correa who transferred to the New Mexico Lobos.[9]
