St. Augustine Catholic High School is a Separate high school in Markham, Ontario, Canada. It is a technologically oriented school, is part of the York Catholic District School Board, and opened in 2001. As of September 2009, it had an enrollment of 1340 students[2] and 80 faculty members. In the Fraser Institute's Report Card on Ontario’s Secondary Schools 2013, the school was ranked 16 out of 719 secondary schools in Ontario with an overall rating of 8.7 out of 10.[3]

Curriculum

Following the Ontario curriculum like other Catholic high schools in the York Catholic District School Board, studies at St. Augustine CHS include: Math, English language studies, Modern Language studies, Canadian and world studies, Technology, Visual Art, Musical Studies, Religion, Business, and Science.

Additionally, St. Augustine has a Laptop Learning Program. The program is used to enhance the learning of students by using technologically appropriate tools that are meant to engage, stimulate and develop student knowledge, skills and attitudes. The optional program is designed for students in Grades 9-11 in the core subject areas such as Mathematics, English, Religion, Geography (Grade 9), history (Grade 10), Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Business Studies. Students use corporate-level Lenovo ThinkPads and have a comprehensive set of programs and software installed in them for student use. Students use the laptops as a complement to classroom teaching so that they can be introduced to 21st Century Learning and Web 2.0 skills such as blogging, social media tools, and web-based instructional strategies.

School Clubs/Teams

Student-run councils and clubs, are School Teams, Student Council, Athletic Council, DECA, OSAID, Matt 25, and HEART. The following is a description of some of the councils and their mandate.

Student Administrative Council (SAC)

The Student Administrative Council is responsible for all the core activities throughout the school year. It sponsors events including "Open Mic Night, "St. Augustine Idol", "Semi-Formal" and school dances.

Athletic Council

The Athletic Council hosts Pep Rallies and Athletic Banquet. They participate in fund raising for events outside of school involving team travel. The Council executive is selected by the school administration.

Arts Council

The Arts Council promotes the arts through student activities, contests, magazines, and art shows throughout the year. Arts Council is an alternative way to express yourself another way you cannot with words.[4]

Matt 25 Social Justice Council

Taking its name from scripture, Matthew 25, Matt 25 tries to inform the student body on global or local issues it feels need social justice. It attempt to involve St. Augustine's students in making a difference and 'be the change'. Matt 25 runs events such as Let's Just Love Week, Get a Share out of Kicking, Fight the Feeling and Social Justice Awareness Week. Let's Just Love Week works to bring love and respect into the student body over Valentine's week. SJAW, the council's culminating event, focuses in on global social injustice issues. In 2008 it is planned that SJAW will address these issues on a continental scale, having events held for five continents on a different day of the week.

DECA@SACHS

An Affiliated Council of DECA Ontario. DECA@SACHS is a business oriented council, where members participate in fund raising and apply their business skills to real life situations. Roleplaying is emphasized. The student might take on the role of an employee/ manager in a store, dealing with business related matters. As a member of DECA Ontario, DECA@SACHS attends the Ontario Provincials, which are a competition where DECA students from all over Ontario demonstrate their Business Skills in role playing. DECA was established in the 2002-2003 school year. There were 45 members in 2009.

Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID)

An anti-impaired driving initiative which is found across the province of Ontario, aimed primarily at youth involvement in combatting impaired driving. This Council encourages the student population to practice responsible drinking and never to drive while under the influence of alcohol. OSAID regularly holds Anti-Drinking activities, such as a Chain of Hope, or stage events. The Council has also initiated a charity Fashion Show, which will be the first such event held at St. Augustine.

Reach for the Top

A Trivia Based Competitive Team which has participated in regional competitions. The 2011 regional Reach for the Top Tournament was, in fact, hosted by St. Augustine. The Reach for the Top team is composed of four different teams. The Senior Competitive Team represents St. Augustine at the Senior Division and the Junior Competitive Team competes at the Intermediate level. There are also practice teams at both levels of competition.

Titan Times Newspaper

The newspaper club of St. Augustine, they aim to bring the student community recaps and updates on the happenings within the school. They enjoyed their most successful years between 2010-2013, and continues to do their best to keep the students up-to-date with the events in the school. It is always open to new writers and guest writers!

Sports Teams

Students compete with other schools in the York Region in both Junior (Grades 9 and 10) and Senior (Grades 11 and 12) Divisions in the YRAA (York Region Athletic Association). As of 2009, the YRAA included 49 high schools across York Region, with most of its schools coming from either the York Catholic District School Board or the York Region District School Board, although there are several private schools there too.
