Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE) an engineering institute in Tamil Nadu, located at Pennalur, Sriperumbudur near Chennai.

SVCE was founded by the Sri Venkateswara Educational and Health Trust (SVEHT) in 1985. The Trust was founded on August 1, 1984 at the behest of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. The college, established in the city of Chennai by the Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation(SPIC) group, a prominent petro-chemical corporation in India, is said to be among the top engineering colleges[1] in Tamil Nadu, and a Tier-I institution among self-financing colleges.[2]

SVCE's founding objective was to implement a programme of education in engineering and allied sciences, to promote research, disseminate knowledge and to foster the cooperation and exchange of ideas between the academic community and industrial organizations and to develop entrepreneurship skills among students.

History

Inauguration of the old college campus, April 8, 1985

Initial years

In November 1985 the college was granted permission to conduct engineering courses in the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science Engineering, awarded by the University of Madras.

The college complex at Nazarathpet (near Poonamallee) was inaugurated on April 8, 1985 by Sri S.L Khurana, former Governor of Tamil Nadu.[3]

Expansion

The entrance to the college

In 1991, the college shifted into its new campus at Pennalur, near the town of Sriperumbudur. The buildings were designed by the architect P.T. Krishnan. The inaugural function of the new Campus was performed on July 25, 1991 in the presence of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal; was inaugurated by Shri R. Venketaraman (former President of India) on January 5, 1992; and received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education the same year. Courses in Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Chemical Engineering Courses were started in 1994. [3]

The college celebrated its decennial in March 1995 in the presence of former Minister of State for Commerce and present home minister of the Government of India Shri P. Chidambaram. In 1996 the college began a course in Information Technology and was the first college in the country to do so.[4] The college obtained an ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2002.[3] Dr.R.Parthiban who was previously the Vice-Principal and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering is Principal of the college since May 2014.

Library

SVCE has a 1,338-square-metre (14,400 sq ft) library spanning three floors with over 21,000 titles covering major fields of science and engineering, a conference room, a study space and a seating capacity of over 200. The ground floor is air-conditioned, with conferencing, multimedia, internet, reprography facilities, a CD-ROM collection and a book bank for deserving students.

The central library

The college subscribes to most major technical journals including those by the IEEE, ACM and ASME. Over 59,000 volumes and 200 CDs are available and around 400 print and online journals are subscribed.

Apart from the central library, all departments maintain their own libraries. SVCE is an institutional member of The British Council Library, IIT Madras, American Council Library, DELNET and MALIBNET.[5] The library uses multimedia computers with internet connectivity, CBT, CDs, e-books and e-journals to promote e-learning.

New Department IMS (Information Management System) was started in year 2012.[6]

Sports Infrastructure

The cricket ground

The 15 acres (653,400.0 sq ft) facility has a swimming pool, synthetic and clay tennis courts, turf cricket ground, basketball, football grounds, ball badminton, volleyball courts and a 400 meter track for athletics.[7]

350-square-metre (3,800 sq ft) is dedicated to a table tennis hall, gymnasium, and carom and chess rooms.

Students participate in intramural, extramural and the Tamil Nadu Inter Engineering Sports (TIES) competitions. The college conducts inter-college tournaments in basketball, volleyball, cricket and ball badminton.

Medical Center

The campus houses a medical center near the hostel blocks, with a nurse and doctor available round the clock to attend to emergencies. There is an emergency Ambulance van available round the clock.

Entrepreneurship Development Cell

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell was formed in 1996, and has organized awareness camps to motivate students to become entrepreneurs.

Student Life at SVCE

Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering believes in The student dress code is NOT influenced by the management and the college rules are, The campus is very large with sprawling greenery and individual blocks for various departments and Research and Development Centres. The college cafeteria functions throughout the day and serves snacks, drinks and packed food items alongside South Indian and North Indian Breakfast and Lunch choices. WiFi Umbrellas with Power Sockets are set up at various points across the campus enabling high speed Web access for students and faculty.

For an undergraduate student at SVCE, there are quite a lot of subject based activities, lectures and workshops happening at college in between exams to keep the students engaged in multiple activities. The college has Memorandum of Understandings signed with various industries and companies, including Multinational giants to enable research options and internship opportunities for

Housing

The SVCE housing comprises two clusters of seven blocks for Gents and three blocks for ladies. The first block was built and inaugurated in 1998. Over the years more blocks have been added along with one each dining hall for Gents and ladies. For all the Marine Engineering students, it is mandatory to live in the hostels. A total of around 380 Ladies and 850 Gents can stay in the hostel. Facilities such as indoor games, TV, WiFi and laundromats are available so that students lead a comfortable life.
