Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College(SMVEC) is an engineering college in Pondicherry, Puducherry union territory, India. The college was established in 1999, to provide technical education to young citizens. The institution is affiliated to Pondicherry University and is approved by All India Council for Technical Education.

Location and Access

The college is located in the sub-urban locality of Madagadipet, around 22 kilometers from Puducherry and 20 kilometers from Villupuram. It is accessible directly by road. Bus transport provided by PRTC, TNSPTC and private bus operators provide direct transport till Madagadipet,

Admission

Eligibility

Eligibility to admission to the UG degree courses is a successful completion of the Higher Secondary course or equivalent level education for direct entry students. For lateral entry students(those entering the course in its second year), Diploma degree in any engineering course is necessary. Also, students can enter via CENTAC, in which case they would not have to pay management seats. 50% of the college seats are reserved for students who deserve CENTAC seats.

Library

-The college has a spacious library with 58,761 volumes of books, besides a number of Indian and foreign journals, periodicals, newsletters and magazines. Open access system is being followed. A separate reference section and reading hall is also available.

Controversy

-2014 A first-year girl student committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of the college building in Puducherry on Monday. Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology (MIT) management said, a first-year electrical and electronics engineering student, who reached the college on Monday morning, did not attend class but climbed to the terrace of the five-storey college building and committed suicide by jumping from there to the ground.

-2013 A former student of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College cum Hospital, S Dinakar Rajendiran, committed suicide by slitting his veins using a surgical knife.

-2012 Two students of the medical college -- Niveditha (first year) from Ottanchathiram in Dindugal district and S Priyadarshini (third year) from Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh -- committed suicide on the college campus on May 2 and on May 17, 2012.

-2012 A Azhagumalar from Puducherry, who served as an intern in college's health centre at Thiruvananinallur, Villupuram district, ended her life by jumping into the sea off the Puducherry coast on January 10, 2012. Management

Sri Manakula Vinayaga Educational Trust (SMVE Trust) was formed with the avowed objective of imparting quality medical and technical education especially to the rural sections of the society. SMVE Trust was established in the year 1998 under the Chairmanship of our beloved Founder Late Shri . N.Kesavan and is progressing in its vision under the guidance of Shri. M. Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director, Shri.S.V.Sugumaran, Vice Chairmanan, Dr.K.Narayanasamy, Secretary. To cherish this objective and to join hands with the policy of the Government of India in enhancing Medical and Technical Education to meet the needs of our nation by ensuring the employability of the students, the trust has established “Mailam Engineering College” in the year 1998 and “Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College” in 1999.
