Fleet developments
SriLankan Airlines aims to boost its fleet to 30 aircraft over the next four years, and is currently in talks with both Airbus and Boeing regarding a deal that may consist of up to nine long-haul aircraft. It has also leased four additional Airbus A320 aircraft. SriLankan's CEO Kapila Chandrasena stated that the carrier wants to add either Airbus A330-300 or Boeing 777 aircraft to its fleet to replace its Airbus A340-300s, with deliveries beginning in 2013–2014. Selected aircraft have also been refurbished to incorporate flat bed seating in business class and an enhanced Inflight Entertainment system.
In April 2013, it was announced that SriLankan Airlines had won government approval to acquire four Airbus A350-900 and six A330-300 aircraft, with deliveries starting from October 2014. A further three Airbus A350-900s will be leased, with deliveries of these aircraft starting in 2017.
Future fleet plans
Over the long term SriLankan aims to transition its narrowbody fleet to A321neos. An order for new-generation narrowbody aircraft is not expected in the near term although the carrier is open to start considering lease proposals for A321neos. SriLankan has only been committing to relatively short lease periods on its A321neos – approximately three to four year – in order to leave open the possibility of transitioning to A321neos.
SriLankan generally sees the A321/A321neo as the ideal size for its narrowbody routes. This will allow for capacity expansion without increasing the number of units. As is the case with the widebodies, SriLankan’s business plan does not currently envision any expansion in the size of its narrowbody fleet. But, depending on market conditions, it may later consider acquiring one or two growth aircraft.
SriLankan Airlines finalized agreement to lease four A321neos, two on lease from AerCap (Netherlands) and two on lease from Air Lease (US). 20FEB2015
