Springhead is a suburban area of Saddleworth, a civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England.

Description

Situated along the eastern edge of the Greater Manchester Urban Area, Springhead is contiguous with the village of Lees, the Oldham districts of Greenacres and Waterhead, and Austerlands and Grotton areas of Saddleworth.

Springhead once formed its own urban district, within the West Riding of Yorkshire, and was the birthplace of prominent suffragette, Annie Kenney.

Springhead got its name from a building in the village called Springhead House. In the back garden of the house was a spring and they named Springhead after that house.

The main hub is the Post Office where at Christmas the Christmas Tree is placed and then the lights are switched on. There is also a Community Centre and 2 schools.

Historically there was a railway named the Grotton and Springhaed Railway. This has now been destroyed and replaced with a bridal path commonly known as 'The Railway'.

Shopping

Springhead has many types of shops such as a charity shop, tattoo parlor, glass fitters, hairdresser, chippys, corner shops and pubs. Springhead has a great array of corner shops such as 2 Raja Bros on Oldham Road and Costcutter on Carr House Road. It also has the Blue Ginger Chinese Takeaway situated on Oldham Road. There are also may pubs in Springhead such as the Dog and Partridge, the Peels Arms and the Top House.

Education

There are two brilliant schools in Springhead. Springhead Infant and Nursery School and Knowsley Junior School. These two schools in the past have had strong connections are both due to be amalgamated into one. There is also a playgroup ran in the Community Centre on Ashes Lane and Springhaed Infant and Nursery School offers a part-time Nursery huge for children wishing to attend the main school. The village of Springhead is a huge feeder for the Saddleworth School. Knowsley Junior School is said to be giving the most pupils to Saddleworth out of all the schools in the area.
