Spotify Sessions is the second extended play by American alternative rock band Foster the People. The EP, exclusive to commercial music streaming service Spotify, was released by Columbia Records on April 15, 2014. The EP is the fifth release by the band in promotion of their second studio album Supermodel.
Background
Foster the People released their second studio album Supermodel in March 2014. It was preceded by a large-scale marketing campaign, with the release of three singles by Columbia Records, the execution of the largest mural on the United States West Coast,[1] and the production of a Supermodel documentary series.[2] Despite mixed reviews of the album,[3] it was commercially successful, charting on eleven national record charts, including a #3 peak on the Billboard 200.[4] The album also peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts.[5][6] Spotify Sessions was recorded and produced, in co-operation with commercial music streaming service Spotify, as a release to further promote Supermodel.
Recording
Foster the People's Spotify Sessions was recorded at the The Village, a recording studio located in Santa Monica in West Los Angeles, California. The Village, iconic for its roster of artists that have recorded at the studio, was previously used by the band for production on their studio albums Torches and Supermodel.[7]
Promotion
After the release of the EP, a music video was produced for the Spotify Sessions version of "Best Friend". The video, featuring the band performing and recording the song live for Spotify Sessions, was released on YouTube on April 16, 2014.[8]
Nevermind (Alternate Version)
The EP was preceded by a Spotify-exclusive promotional single entitled "Nevermind". The one-track single was also recorded for the band's Spotify Sessions, although does not appear as a track on the EP itself. The single features a live recording, dubbed an "Alternate version", of Supermodel track "Nevermind".[9]
