Spirit gum

A 3 oz. Bottle of Spirit Gum

Spirit gum is an adhesive, made mostly of SD Alcohol 35-A (the solvent, or "spirit") and resin (the adhesive, or "gum"), used primarily for affixing costume prosthetics such as wigs, merkins, or false facial hair. It has been manufactured since the 1890s, and has long been a standard tool in theatrical performances where prosthetic makeup or affixed costuming is used. It has also often been used in burlesque, in affixing pasties.

Ingredients: Isopropyl Alcohol, Rosin, Copal, & Silica

Spirit Gum formulas vary from brand to brand. While some Spirit Gum formulas may use raw materials of suspect origin and may be considered “toxic”, others, like the brand pictured in the article, use purified pharmaceutical grade raw materials that are frequently found in solutions that coat medicine tablets and capsules, and are not toxic.

Spirit Gum is also commonly used to paste eyebrows and other pasties by female impersonators also known as drag queens. The use of spirit gum helps conceal the thickness and shape of a queen's eyebrows and allows her to give a better shaped brow.
