Reception

Critical response

The song was received very well by fans and critics, taking a liking to the song and stating that it would've made a good single. Another person who responded well to the song was American singer Madonna, who added the song to her Celebrity playlist for iTunes [2] so the song therefore gained popularity in the US. On the season 2 premiere episode of America's Best Dance Crew, which aired on 19 June, Fanny Pak used "Speakerphone" in the Crew Choice Challenge.

Chart performance

Despite never being released, the song charted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number eighty-seven based on high downloads from the album. It gained popularity in the U,S. because of Madonna adding it to her celebrity playlist on iTunes in 2008.

Live performances

Minogue opened her 2008 world tour performing the song with robotic type dancers and big speakers as props.[3] She used a giant hoop to lower her to the stage. She also performed the song at her North American Tour in the same sort of style but with an increased tempo (Steve Anderson remix). The winning video of the "Speakerphone Video Competition", which began to trend on Tiwtter.[4] and was won by Rudolf Pap [5]

Lawsuit

In October 2013, Salsoul Records filed a lawsuit against Minogue and Warner Bros., claiming that "Speakerphone" duplicated the "entire rhythm" of the 1978 Gaz song "Sing Sing".[6][7]
