Spanish rock
Spain has produced a great variety of rock and roll.
There have also been a number of acts who have incorporated the Celtic musical heritage of that region into Celtic rock sung in Spanish, like Celtas Cortos.
Spain's largest and oldest rock music scenes are in Madrid and Barcelona. There are also large rock scenes in the large cities of the Basque Country such as Bilbao and San Sebastián, Valencia, and in Zaragoza but bands and venues exist throughout the country.
New groups were born, adopting a punk style and composing songs about concrete concepts. At late 70's, bands such as Leño introduced successfully the Spanish urban rock style. More modern groups like Marea, La Fuga, Mägo de Oz, Platero y Tú, Extremoduro, Reincidentes, Los Rodríguez, the classic band Héroes del Silencio from Zaragoza, and other mixed styles with ska (Ska-P) are the most popular. Other worldwide famous Spanish rock bands are Illegales which had their greatest period in the 1980s. Bands like Radio Futura introduced the concept of latin rock in Spain and, by association, in Europe.
Lately, there has been a rise in more pop oriented bands from all over Spain such as La Oreja de Van Gogh who hail from San Sebastian in Northern Spain, or Amaral from Zaragoza and Fito & Fitipaldis also from the Basque Country, among others, have incorporated several different genres into their pop-rock musical structure.
Since the mid 1980s there have also been a number of rock bands singing in the other languages spoken in Spain, with the most important such scene being the Catalan rock, sung in Catalan. Another important focus is represented by Basque rock, showing a considerable amount of groups singing in Basque, like Gatibu, Berri Txarrak, Ken Zazpi.
Also, Andalusian rock is a fusion of flamenco with progressive rock. Some of the most well-known examples of this scene from its 1970s heyday are the bands Smash, Crack, Gotic (Escenes, 1977), Iman Califato Independiente (Iman Califato Independiente), Iceberg (Coses Nostres), Mezquita and Triana.
