Spandan (JIPMER)
Spandan is the annual intercollegiate cultural, literary and sports festival of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Pondicherry, India. It is held during late August and early September.It runs over six days. Spandan is the largest medical inter-college festival in southern India and has participants from medical colleges all over India as well as from regional engineering colleges, commerce, arts, science and law colleges. The number of registered participants is around 5000 every year from over 70 colleges.
History
In the 1960s and 1970s the JIPMER Students Association conducted an inter-collegiate sporting festival that included the Dr.S.S.Chaddha Memorial Hockey tournament and the Dr.S.L.Basu Memorial Football tournament. In 1978, the inter-collegiate sporting festival became Les Jeux and included basketball and badminton in addition to hockey and football. In 1980, cultural and literary events were added to the sporting events and were named Les Beaux Arts. In 1982, Les Jeux and Les Beaux Arts were folded into the overarching Spandan festival.

Les Beaux Arts (Cultural events)
The major cultural events are held at the Open Air Theatre in the evenings.The events being
- Alaap – Indian music
- Chorea – Theme & Non theme based Choreography
- Dernier Cri – Fashion Show
- Euphony – Western Acoustics
- Tinnitus – Western Music
The minor stage events ‘Vaudeville’ consist of Antakshari, Skit, Miming and Ad zap. Also there are several other events going on during the day time in many of the theatres and halls in the Institution Block. ‘Motif’ includes sketching, painting, collage, face painting, mehendi, rangoli, photography and clay modelling.

- Loquacity - Debate, Just a minute, Extempore
- Graffiti - Creative Writing, Wall Magazine

The sports events include
- Fortius (Hockey and Football).
- Citius (Chess, Table Tennis and Badminton)
- Altius (Basketball, Volleyball and Throwball)
Professional Shows
Covering genres ranging from classical Indian music, Indian folk, to pop and rock, Spandan has been a host to renowned artists. The Raghu Dixit Project, Benny Dayal are just a few to name. Popular rock bands like Junkyard Groove, Roxygen and Parousia have performed at the Spandan stage.
Spandan 2013
Spandan 2013, the 28th Spandan was held from 1 September to 7 September. The organisers were the prefinal year students of the batch of 2010 MBBS (JSA 2013). 2013 Spandan kicked off with a grand MARATHON in the presence of famous personalities for the cause of Road Safety awareness. The cultural events started with a LASER DJ with the renowned Midival Punditz. The theme was "Celebrating a hundred years of Indian Cinema", apt as the gala of Cine events were also to be unveiled . The Pro shows included famous artists like DRUMS SIVAMANI, SINGER KARTHIK and international celebrities like NORIG from Paris. It also included famous bands like Agam, Live Banned, Karthik Iyer, and Beauty and the Beasts. Spandan 2013 also featured for the first time, a Pro -Dance meet with several professional dance groups performed. In short, this was said to be the biggest SPANDAN in the history of JIPMER. And all this wasn't without the students of JIPMER leading the way to serve the society with various ongoing projects over the year, in association with Smile foundations.
