Southern School of Natural Therapies (SSNT) is a higher education provider based in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. The school is a provider of natural and alternative medicine education in Australia.

The school was established in 1961 by Alfred Jacka and was originally known as the Victorian Branch of the Australian National Association of Naturopaths, Osteopaths and Chiropractors. It is one of the oldest colleges for health education in Australia and the first in Australia to gain degree accreditation for coursework in naturopathy and clinical myotherapy.

The School was acquired by "Think: Education Group in 2010". After this purchase, the school business model changed and it joined the Group's other properties as for-profit private education providers. Other members of this group includeAPM College of Business and Communication, Australian College of Natural Therapies, Australian National College of Beauty, Billy Blue College of Design, CATC Design School, Jansen Newman Institute and the William Blue College of Hospitality Management. ^[1]

In 1981, the college was renamed "Southern School of Natural Therapies" and in 1983 expanded to include unique coursework in massage. Prior to this, massage was integrated with the naturopathy coursework.

In 1997, Southern School of Natural Therapies became the first private education provider to gain degree accreditation for Naturopathy. The School accepted students for degree-level coursework in 1998.^[2]

In 2002 the school continued expanding by offering degree programs for Traditional Chinese Medicine and in 2003 became the first in Australia to gain degree level accreditation for coursework in Clinical Myotherapy.

Southern School of Natural Therapies held a 50th Anniversary celebration December 2011. This celebration acknowledged program leadership for delivering training in multiple natural therapies.

Courses

Southern School of Natural Therapies offers degree level courses in Naturopathy, Clinical Myotherapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Additionally, programs are available in Massage for both Certificate and Diplomas levels. The School is a registered VTAC Provider and offers FEE-HELP / VET FEE-HELP to applicable students on selected courses. All Degrees offered by SSNT are accredited by the VRQA (Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority.

Industry Recognition

Students are encouraged to gain industry recognition by participating in professional associations and regulatory boards. These include the Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA),^[3] Health Services Union – Professional Branch (HSU-PB), National Herbalists’ Association of Australia (NHAA),^[4] Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria (CMRBV),^[5] The Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA),^[6] Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT),^[7] Association of Massage Therapists (AMT),^[8] and Massage Association of Australia (MAA).^[9]

The Southern Clinic

The Southern Clinic is the on-campus teaching clinic attended by senior-level students. All senior-level students receive access to hands-on learning within the School Clinic. This Clinic provides services to students, staff and the general public. Each clinic session is supervised by a qualified and experienced practitioner.
