Southern Pacific Railroad Depot (Modesto, California)
Southern Pacific Railroad Depot of Modesto is a railroad depot built in 1915 for the San Joaquin Valley region's Southern Pacific railroad system use. It is in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California. The Mission Revival style depot was restored in 1993 and now functions as the Modesto Transportation Center.
History and architecture
The Southern Pacific Depot was constructed in 1915 in Mission Revival Style architecture, the depot's striking porticoes and long platform have been preserved as icons of the city's early connection with the railway system. The Central Pacific Railroad started in the city of Modesto in 1870, and was taken over by the Southern Pacific in 1884. This facility now serves as the city's bus transportation center.[1] Passenger rail transportation to and from Modesto takes place at the newer Modesto (Amtrak station) across town.
