The South Point Arena, is a proposed 9,000 seat capacity arena to serve the suburban Henry County, Georgia. The 600,000-square-foot (56,000 m2) multi-purpose arena in McDonough, Georgia currently in the planning stages. It is part of the large $275,000,000 real estate development in McDonough located off Interstate 75 exit 218 on Georgia Highway 20. Construction could start in the Fall of 2008 and could open as early as Christmas 2009. The cost of the arena is projected to be $50,000,000. The Atlanta Journal Constitution says the arena would be much like Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, a suburb north of Atlanta. This will bring Broadway to Mcdonough.
The project will most likely depend on the ability to bring in sports teams. Suggestions have including creating a new Minor League Hockey and bringing current Atlanta teams to Henry County, the Georgia Force Atlanta's Arena Football League franchise and the Atlanta Hawks Atlanta's National Basketball Association franchise have both been proposed and the AJC reported that talks had been initiated in between the Georgia Force and the South Point developers.
Competition
Henry County is already home to the states largest sporting venue, Atlanta Motor Speedway. Outside of Atlanta Motor Speedway the closest major sporting venue to Henry County is Turner Field home of the Atlanta Braves. The proposed Arena would bring Atlanta sports teams to Henry County, along with the current development of a 4,000 seat multipurpose arena and a 10,000 seat football stadium at Strong Rock Christian School only a few miles from the proposed South Point Arena. It is more questionable though, of how it would bring in other entertainment with four major performing art theaters in the immediate area, the Clayton County Performing Arts Center a 2,000 seat theater, the Henry County Performing Arts Center a 750 seat theater and two new theaters at the new Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, a 3,400 seat performing arts theater and a 3,200 seat amphitheater are currently in development.
