South Johnstone is a small town in north Queensland, Australia. It is approximately 10 kilometres (6 mi) south-west of Innisfail and is within the local government area of the Cassowary Coast Region.[2] At the 2011 census, South Johnstone had a population of 411.[1]
History
The town was called Basilisk until 1954, when it was officially re-named South Johnstone after the South Johnstone River. The river was named by George Elphinstone Dalrymple in honour of Robert Johnstone who accompanied him on an expedition in 1873.[2]
