South Adelaide Basketball Club was established in 1952. It was one of the founding clubs of basketball in South Australia. The Panthers have enjoyed success with both Senior & Junior teams. The Men's ABL team has won many premiership flags, the most recent coming during the 1998 winter season.
The Club still holds the Australian Basketball record of 51 consecutive wins, being set in 1965. The Club has developed many champions who have gone on to play in the NBL and represent Australia in the Summer Olympics.
Arguably the most famous South Adelaide player was Adelaide 36ers and National Basketball League legend Mark Davis. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania born Davis came to Australia in 1985 to play with the Panthers after winning a championship with Dorados Chihuahua in Mexico. After some impressive early performances, he came to the attention of then 36ers coach Ken Cole who signed the 6'7" (201 cm) Power forward. Davis would go on to be regarded as one of the best ever American import players ever to come to Australia, winning the NBL Grand Final MVP in the 36ers championship win in 1986 and following that by winning the League MVP award in 1987.
