Sound Novel Tsukūru (サウンドノベルツクール Saundo Noberu Tsukūru, "Sound Novel Maker")[3] is a Super Famicom graphic novel video game where players can either read or create interactive fiction on their own console systems. The Japanese name, Tsukūru is a pun mixing the Japanese word tsukuru (作る), which means "make" or "create", with tsūru (ツール), the Japanese transcription of the English word "tool".

Stories can be saved on a battery-backed memory, a Turbo File (ASCII) device (Super Turbo File mode) or through the use of removable 8 megabit memory cassettes that are used with the Satellaview subsystem. There is a sequel to this game called Sound Novel Tsukūru 2 for the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn; it was released on September 25, 1997 exclusively in Japan.[4]

This video game was released exclusively in Japan and the game functions in Japanese (although limited amounts of English are possible). Sounds can be added in places where they fit appropriately in the user's created story line. The game comes with a previously created graphic novel about exploring an old house. Due to the limitations in the game's engine, it can only show shadows of non-player characters that the player meets on his journey. Settings can range from a modern day train to a rural house and even wilderness can be included in various stages of wildness.

With Ongaku Tsukūru: Kanadeeru, one could compose his/her own music to be used in Sound Novel Tsukūru. Ongaku Tsukūru: Kanadeeru has a special menu option for converting composed music into a specific format recognized by Sound Novel Tsukūru and RPG Tsukūru 2, which can only be saved on a Satellaview Memory Cassette (SHVC-031).

Sound Novel Tsukūru 2 (サウンドノベルツクール2 Saundo Noberu Tsukūru 2, "Sound Novel Maker 2")[5] is a Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn video game that was exclusively released in Japan. It is the sequel to Sound Novel Tsukūru for the Super Famicom.

The engine for making interactive fiction is nearly identical to its prequel. However, it is more complex with more choices and opportunities for interaction becoming possible. There are also superior graphics and sound quality.[5] Anime-like people appear on the title screen of the video game that serves as a reminder of the game's complexity; it also makes the game appeal to Japanese people interested in making their own "sound novel" stories. The game is completely unplayable, however, unless the player is fluent in Japanese.[5]
