Soumya Murder Case is a criminal case regarding the rape and murder of Soumya, a 23-year-old woman from Manjakkad near Shornur, while she was travelling in a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shornur on February 1, 2011.

The incident

The incident happened in train number 56608, Ernakulam Junction-Shoranur Junction passenger train immediately after it left the Vallathol Nagar railway station. According to the prosecution, Govindachami hailing from Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu tried to rob Soumya in a deserted ladies' compartment, smashed her head against the wall when she resisted, pushed her hands into the gap of a closing door and threw her out of the train. He jumped out of the speeding train, walked 200 metres to find her lying in a pool of blood, seriously injured. He carried her to woods near the rail track and brutally raped her. The victim succumbed to injuries at the Government Medical College, Thrissur on February 6 at 3 PM.

The victim

The victim, Soumya was a supermarket assistant in Kochi. She was travelling back to her home and on the following day her engagement ceremony was supposed to take place.

The criminal

The Thrissur Fast Track Court has found the accused Govindachami, a 33-year-old native of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu guilty and awarded capital punishment.[1][2][3][4]
