Soumya

Soumya (Sanskrit: सौम्य) is a name that is given to children in India. In Eastern India, it is given to males, and its meaning is - born of Soma is Soumya. Soma is Chandra and Soumya therefore means Buddha who is said to be the son of Chandra. But Soumya also means Shubhagrahas or benefics as opposed to Krura or wild or cruel.[1]

In Canarese or Kannada Soumya means "The Regent of Mercury and son of the Moon.[3]

In Bengali Soumya সৌম্য means a mentally calm or placid or balanced; beautiful, majestic, dignified, unruffled. ̃দর্শন a. having a calm or placid appearance; good-looking, handsome; dignified, majestic; un ruffled. ̃ভাব n. mental calm or equilibrium; placidity. ̃মূর্তি a. same as সৌম্যদর্শন । ☐ n. a calm or placid or unruffled appearance; a handsome figure.[4]

Girls too have the name Soumya pronounced as "Soumyaa".

In other parts of India, Soumya comes from the Hindi word which means, "Obedient; Good nature ; Innocent." Sanskrit word which means, "Calm, serene."[6]

Based on popular usage, it is 1.691 times more common for Soumya to be a girl's name.[7]
