Hangul 소서노
Hanja 西
Revised Romanization So Seono
McCune–Reischauer So Sŏno

So Seo-no[1][2] (Hangul: 소서노 Hanja: 召西奴) was the wife of King Dongmyeong (Jumong), and remembered as the First Queen of Goguryeo and a key figure in the founding of both Goguryeo and Baekje. She was the mother of Biryu and the first King of Baekje, Onjo.

Establishing of two kingdoms

A traditional account from the Annals of Baekje section in the Samguk Sagi, states that Soseono was the daughter of Yeon Ta-bal, a wealthy influential figure in Jolbon[3] and married to Jumong. However, the same source officially states that the chief of Habaek tribe gave his daughter to Jumong, who had fled Dongbuyeo with his followers, in marriage. According to the Samguk Sagi, Jumong was Lady Soseono's second husband. Her first husband was Wutae.

After Jumong's son Yuri and Yuri's mother Ye So-ya, who were both presumed to have died, returned to Goguryeo, Yuri became the crown prince of Goguryeo. Soseono left Goguryeo, taking her two sons Biryu and Onjo south to found their own kingdom, Baekje.

Death

Soseono died in 6 BC at the age of 61[4] after her second son Onjo became the first king of Baekje.

Notes

  1. So Seo-no's family name is unknown.
  2. 'So Seono' is only a given name. The meaning of So Seo-no 召西 (This is an indication of the phonetic value. Just a Phonetic of the Korean '솟은(Soseun - towering, highlight)') + 奴 (slave, child), resulting from the "Extraordinary girl" or "Noble woman" is often presumed.
