Soroti Power Station is a proposed 10 MW solar power plant in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community.[1]

Location

The power station is located in Soroti District, outside of the town of Soroti, in the Eastern Region of Uganda, approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) by road northeast of Kampala, the country's capital and largest city.[2]

Overview

The power station will have capacity of 10 Megawatts, to be sold directly to Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), for integration in the national electricity grid. The power will be evacuated via a substation, near the solar power plant. It is estimated that the energy generated will power approximately 40,000 homes, located near the power station, thereby keeping transmission losses to a minimum.[3]

Developers

The power station is being developed by a consortium of two companies: (a) Access Power MEA (Access), is a company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (b) TSK Electronica, is a company based in Spain. They won the competitive bidding and were awarded the development contract at the same time as the developers of Tororo Solar Power Station.[4]

Construction timeline, costs and funding

The budgeted construction costs are US$17 million. The project will receive partial funding from the European Union, the Government of Uganda and KfW.[5] It is anticipated that the power station will be fully operational by December 2015.[1]
