Development

Following the critical and commercial success of Aadukalam (2011), Dayanidhi Azhagiri signed on Vetrimaaran and Dhanush in January 2011 to work on a film for his studio, Cloud Nine Movies. Production works were delayed as Vetrimaaran was still completing the pre-production of Vada Chennai, while Dhanush was finishing other projects he had committed to feature in.[3] In April 2012, Vetrimaaran's other collaboration with Cloud Nine Movies, Vada Chennai, was shelved and Azhagiri announced that filming would begin shortly for the project featuring Dhanush. G. V. Prakash Kumar was confirmed as the film's music director, while it was also announced that Velraj would be the film's cinematographer.[4] After a further period of inactivity, Azhagiri confirmed that the film would start shortly after May 2013, revealing that pre-production work had started.[2] Early reports suggested that the film would be shot with a forest backdrop, and titles including Venghai Samy and Kaadu were speculated.[5][6] Manisha Yadav and Amala Paul and also Trisha Krishnan were reported to also be a part of the cast, with the former taking part in a screen test.[7] However in a turn of events, Cloud Nine Movies opted out of the project and Dhanush's Wunderbar Studios took over production duties. Instead of using the story initially planned for the venture produced by Azhagiri, Dhanush and Vetrimaaran worked on a different script based on gambling.[8] Kishore Te, who was signed as the editor of the film, died on March 7, 2015 due to a brain clot. In April 2015, it was reported that Santhosh Narayanan had replaced Prakash Kumar as the music director.[9]

Filming

The film subsequently began shoot on 8 March 2014.[10][11] The team held a 10 day schedule in locations on the ECR in Chennai, with Pasupathy, Parthiban and Kay Kay Menon also added to the cast.[12][13] The title of the film was confirmed to be Soodhadi by Vetrimaaran.[14]
