Sony Movie Channel is a Canadian English language category B specialty channel owned by Hollywood Suite and AXN Investments that broadcasts completely in high definition. The channel broadcasts films primarily from the Sony Pictures Entertainment library in addition to Canadian content. Films air in their entirety, uncut and commercial free, with the only commercial messages airing between films.[1]

History

Logo used as Hollywood Festival from November 23, 2011 to September 4, 2012.

On July 2, 2010, Jay Switzer (co-founder of Hollywood Suite), was granted approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch a specialty television channel called The Love Channel, described as "a national, English‑language Category 2 specialty programming service devoted to romance, love and relationships."[2]

While initially set to be launched on November 14, 2011, after several short delays, the channel was launched on November 23, 2011 as Hollywood Festival exclusively in HD along with three other HD channels.[3]

On May 31, 2012, Hollywood Suite announced it had reached a partnership with Sony Pictures Television to re-launch two of its channels under Sony brands. Hollywood Festival became a Canadian version of Sony Movie Channel on September 4, 2012, and focuses primarily on films from the Sony Pictures library.[4][5] At the time of the rebrand, AXN Investments Inc. took a 46.66% ownership in the channel.
