Sonwar Bagh is an area in Srinagar , Jammu and Kashmir which comes under Badami Bagh Cantonment, which is sometimes referred to as Sonwar. It is a residential area in Srinagar . Many schools, hotels and restaurants are established here. The main pincodes of this area include 190001 and 190004. It is a home to many politicians like the ex-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah[1] who became the 11th, and youngest, Chief Minister of the Indian Administered state Jammu and Kashmir and also lost the 2014 Sonwar assembly constituency in Srinagar. Sonwar Bagh was one of the worst affected areas from the 2014 India–Pakistan floods in Jammu and Kashmir. It is surrounded by Sulaiman Hill on top of which is Shankaracharya Temple.

Location

Latitude of Sonwar Bagh is 34°04'16.56N and Longitude of the area is 74°50'38.27E approximately. It lies parallel to the Jhelum river and National Highway road near Sonwar Bazaar(market). It is about 3–5 km far way from Lal Chowk which is the commercial hub of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

2014 Kashmir Floods

Sonwar Bagh including many areas of Srinagar like Shivpora, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, Gogji Bagh, Pandrathan, Batwara was worst hit by 2014 India–Pakistan floods.[3] Sonwar Bagh was completely submerged under water for 21 days. Many houses got destroyed and damaged due to the floods but only a few were killed by the floods. The water started entering Sonwar Bagh around 04:00 a.m at night because of a breach in Jhelum River bund and it took it just a few hours to make itself to be at a level to completely fill about more than 1 and a half storeys. After the floods People came back to their houses, started cleaning up the mess created by the floods and got back to their routine life again which was now difficult to handle.
