Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) is a non-profit professional organization providing education on minimally invasive surgery. It describes itself thus:^[1] SAGES represents a worldwide community of surgeons that can bring minimal access surgery, endoscopy and emerging techniques to patients in every country. The mission of the group is: to provide leadership in surgery, particularly gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery, to optimize patient care through education, research and innovation.

It held its first Scientific Session, in tandem with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in September, 1983, and its first independent meeting in Williamsburg in 1986. With support from Springer-Verlag, publisher of Surgical Endoscopy, the 1st World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery was held in Berlin, Germany in 1988

• It published its 1st manual Basic Laparoscopy and Endoscopy in 2000, and is now on its 3rd edition and split into 2 volumes. later its 2nd Manual Perioperative Care in Minimally Invasive Surgery (2005).

Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery

SAGES, in partnership with American College of Surgeons, developed the ^[2] which combines a didatic and surgery skills test and provides certification for minimally invasive surgery. The program was launched to the public in 2007.

In 2006 it began work on "FES, Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery," a flexible endoscopy companion to FLS. FES is slated to launch in early 2013.

SAGES is developing the Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy curriculum and is in talks to develop Fundamentals programs for Robotic Surgery and Hernia Surgery.
