The Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal (SCMHR) is a medical hair removal certification body and professional society located in Madison, Wisconsin.[1]

Overview

The Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal (SCMHR) was originally founded under the name Society for Clinical and Medical Electrologists (SCME) in 1985. The SCMHR provides certification for professional electrologists and laser hair removal professionals, public awareness campaigns about the profession, and act as an information support organization for legislation on electrolysis. The SCMHR offers four levels of certification. The first level certifies individuals as a Certified Clinical Electrologist (CCE), and the second certifies an individual as a Certified Medical Electrologist (CME).[2] The third type of certification is that of Certified Laser Hair Removal Professional (CLHRP) and the fourth is that of Certified Pulse Light Hair Removal Professional (CPLHRP).[3] The SCMHR offers its certification both nationally in the US and internationally through its International Commission for Hair Removal Certification (ICHRC).[4] The certifications are given based on the results of a written examination.[5] The SCMHR is one of only two national certification organizations for electrologists in the US.[6] The certification is recognized by the governments of states that require electrologists to certify, including Florida,[7] Tennessee,[8] and Texas.[1] The level of CME is required to practice laser hair removal across all states.[3]

The SCMHR also publishes a monthly educational article in Dermascope Magazine.[9] Professionals that have trained under the SCMHR regime include individuals practicing in the United States, Japan, Canada, and Lebanon.[10] The board membership for the SCMHR includes Dr. William Moore, founder of Advanced Skin Fitness.[11]
