Sir Shah Sulaimn Hall (सर शाह सुलेमान हॉल,سر شاہ سلیمان ہال) is a Hall of Residence for the Students of Aligarh Muslim University(AMU), India.[1] It was named after Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman, first Indian Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and former Vice Chancellor of the University. Occupying a premier location in Aligarh Muslim University Campus, It is one of the largest hostels of the university. Established in 1802 by a French Colonist, it stands today as the oldest architectural example of the University.

History

Its main Building, which currently serves as the Provost Office (Administrative Block),was built by a French mercenary officer Pierre Cuillier-Perron. Perron was a French Military Adventurer and Commander in Chief of Mahadaji Shinde's Army. With Aligarh Fort, it was also fortified and commanded by Perron till the Battle of Ally Ghur in the year of 1802, when it was laid under siege by the British 76th Regiment, now known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, under General Lord Gerard Lake.[2]Later in the early 20th century British Government transferred it to the Aligarh Muslim University and was named Sahib Bagh. In 1937-1940, during the Vice Chancellorship of Shah Muhammad Sulaiman it was developed into a full-fledged hall of residence.

Present Status

At present it accommodates Approx. 700 Students of undergraduate, post Graduate as well as research students of Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology. It has 7 hostels, mely Agha Khan Hostel, Bhopal House, Jaikishan Das Hostel, Hasrat Mohani Hostel, Kashmir House, Qidwai Hostel, Mahamoodabad House.[3]
