Singtam (Nepali: सिङ्ताम) is a town in East Sikkim district in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is about 30 km from the state capital Gangtok.

Singtam is located at 27°09′N 88°23′E / 27.15°N 88.38°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 1396feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Singtam had a population of 5431. Males constitute 56% of the population and females 44%. Singtam has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 66%. In Singtam, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transportation

Airport: Nearest airport to Singtam is Bagdogra in West Bengal which is 124 km away from Singtam, from where scheduled flights operates to and fro from Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. The Bagdogra airport is connected to Gangtok by a helicopter service operating between Gangtok-Bagdogra-Gangtok.

Railway: The two nearest railway stations are at Siliguri 114 km from Singtam and New Jalpaiguri 125 km away from here, stabilizing link to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and other important cities in India.

Road: The national highway NH-31A passes through Singtam and connects this place to the rest of the nation. Long distance buses ply from major towns in Bihar, West Bengal and other neighbouring states could be an easy way to reach here. The drive takes 3 hours from Siliguri to reach Singtam. Private Taxis, Jeeps and Landrovers ply regularly on the Gangtok-Siliguri Highway and are available for people want to travel between Gangtok and Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri Junction/Bagdogra, and also for local sightseeing at fixed rates and may be reserved through Tourist Bureau, Govt. of West Bengal, Gangtok.

Note: foreigners need a permit to enter Sikkim which they can easily get at Siliguri.
