Sindhanur (also spelled Sindhnur) is a town and one of the major talukas (administrative divisions) in Raichur District, Karnataka, India. It has a vast area of paddy fields irrigated by water from the Tunga Bhadra left bank canal.

Geography

Sindhanur is located at 15°47′N 76°46′E / 15.78°N 76.77°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 377 metres (1,237 ft). Its area is 1567.70 km2. Sindhanur is the world's largest paddy-producing taluk. It is the place where 5 rivers flow.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Sindhanur had a population of 61,292 (51% male, 49% female). Sindhanur has an average literacy rate of 54%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 63%, and female literacy is 44%. In Sindhanur, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is also to be noted that Sindhanur is a peculiar place wherein one can find people speaking various languages like Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu in addition to Kannada. There are more than 17000 Bengali speaking people in Sindhanur Rehabilitation Project.

Water and agriculture

65% of land is well irrigated. Rice is the main crop, grown twice a year. Other crops are cotton, jowar (sorgum) and bajra (pearl millet).

Business

Sindhanur is one of the largest revenue-making towns in Karnataka. It has almost all the tractor showrooms available in India and it is the second largest tractor selling place in India (first comes Oshiapur in Punjab). One in every six farmers in Sindhanur has his own tractor. The most of leading banks is here many numbers of people having more than 30 acres of land, we can see the landlords who have more than 100 acres of land.
