Simona Caparrini is an Italian actress, born in Florence. She is fluent in English, French and speaks a fairly good Spanish.[1] She is known for: To Rome with Love, directed by movie legend Woody Allen,[2][3] where she plays Aunt Joan, the uptight member of Roman high society opposite Penélope Cruz; and Romeo and Juliet, directed by Carlo Carlei, and starring Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Ed Westwick. She is currently shooting the Warner Bros. production The Man from U.N.C.L.E., directed by Guy Ritchie.

Early life

Simona Caparrini, originally from Tuscany, graduated at the Theatre of Genova's Drama Academy, completing a three-year program. After her degree, she moved to New York City to study acting at the Union Square Theatre with the American actor George DiCenzo.[4]

Career

Born into a family of shoemakers based in Montecatini Terme in the 1980s, Simona's film debut was il muro di gomma, directed by a famous Italian director, Marco Risi. She was eventually chosen by Italian household name Alberto Sordi, to play Wilma, opposite Alberto Sordi himself, the daughter of his old girlfriend, in his feature film Nestore l'ultima corsa.[5][6] Simona gained some fame[7] with this role and promoted the movie in many different cities along with Alberto Sordi.[8]

In the same year she had a cameo role in the Oscar-winning film The Postman (1994), playing Elsa Morante opposite Philippe Noiret directed by Michael Radford; then she played Ursula in the feature film Banditi (1995), starring Ben Gazzara, directed by Stefano Mignucci; and later on Simona starred in the feature film with an ensemble cast Il cielo e' sempre piu' blu' (1996) directed by Antonello Grimaldi.

Simona played different roles in many Italian, French and Spanish TV series. Among them are: Ein Haus in der Toscana (1993), directed by Gabi Kubach for German TV; Compañeros (1998), directed by José Ramón Ayerra for Spansh TV; Marie Fransson (2000), directed by Christiane Spiero for French TV; Orgoglio (2004), where Simona pulled off a very dramatic role praised by the critics,[9] portraying Elvira Graziani, directed by Giorgio Serafini and Vittorio De Sisti; the Tv movie Doctor Clown (2008), directed by Maurizio Nichetti; the dramatic tv series Il Mostro di Firenze (2009), based on a true story The Monster of Florence, where she played Daniela Stefanacci, the mother of a young boy brutally murdered by the monster, directed by Antonello Grimaldi; Io e mio figlio- Nuove storie per il commissario Vivaldi (2010), tv series directed by Luciano Odorisio, starring Lando Buzzanca; Una Buona stagione (2012), directed by Gianni Lepre, etc.

Simona has continued to work in Italy, France and US, starring in many feature films: in 2000, she gained more visibility on the big screen appearing in Io Amo Andrea (2000),[10] where she plays Irene, opposite Francesca Neri, directed by Francesco Nuti; and in 2001, she was in Suor Sorriso, remake of the cult movie The Singing Nun, where she plays Clara (co-leading role, much appreciated by movie critics[11][12] ), directed by American director Roger Deutsch; then eventually came the period piece Il Quaderno della spesa (2003), directed by Tonino Cervi; the comedy Nessun messaggio in segreteria (2005), directed by Luca Miniero and Paolo Genovese, where Simona plays a funny concierge, collecting rave reviews,[13][14][15] opposite Carlo delle Piane and Pierfrancesco Favino; the French sci-fi 8th Wonderland (2008),[16] directed by Nicholas Alberny and Jean Mach; the box office hit Immaturi (2010),[17] directed by Paolo Genovese, where Simona plays Katia, a stubborn sex addict permanently in group therapy, opposite Raul Bova; Interno Giorno (2011), directed by Tommaso Rosseliini, where she embodies Martina, the movie star's talent agent, opposite Fanny Ardant;[18] etc.

Recent news

Simona Caparrini gained more fame in 2012,[19] in Italy and abroad,[20] when she was chosen by Woody Allen to play Aunt Joan in his feature film To Rome with Love. The film had a worldwide release gaining more that 70 million dollars, and becoming one of the best box office results of all times for Woody Allen.

In 2013, she appeared in the feature film Romeo and Juliet, directed by Carlo Carlei; she played a cameo role, as a noble woman friend of the Capulets.[21] The film has a prestigious cast: Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Natascha McElhone, Hailee Steinfeld, and Douglas Booth.

She is currently filming in England The Man from U.N.C.L.E., directed by Guy Ritchie.
