Simon Spencer (born 10 September 1976) is a former English football midfielder. He began his career as a youth at Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and later moved to Brentford, where he made one appearance in the Football League. He represented England U16 and U18 at international level.
Playing career
Tottenham Hotspur
Spencer began his career in the academy at Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.[1] He set up a goal for Rory Allen in the 2-1 1995 FA Youth Cup Final first leg win over Manchester United.[2]
Brentford
Spencer was offered a three-month trial at Division Two side Brentford during the 1997/98 pre-season[3] and was awarded a one-year contract on 1 August 1997.[4] He was joined at the club by former Tottenham youth teammates Leon Townley and Simon Wormull. Spencer made his professional debut in a 3-0 opening day defeat to Millwall on 9 August and was brought off for Ryan Denys at half time by manager Eddie May. He completed his first 90 minutes for the club in the following game, a League Cup first round shootout win over Shrewsbury Town. It proved to be his final appearance for the club and he never featured in a first team squad again. Spencer (along with Stuart Myall, Tamer Fernandes and Joe Omigie) departed the club in January 1998, having negotiated a settlement on his contract.[3]
Non-league football
After his release from Brentford, Spencer dropped into non-league football and played for Conference side Yeovil Town and Isthmian League sides Egham Town and Billericay Town.[5]
International career
Spencer represented the England U16 team.[1] He made his debut for the U18s in a 3-3 friendly draw with Norway on 24 July 1994.[6] He came on as a substitute for David Beresford. His second appearance came two days later in another friendly versus Norway, this time starting the match.[7]
