Simon Ostrovsky (Russian: Симон Островский; born February 2, 1981) is a Soviet-born American journalist, director, and producer.

Career

In 2009 Ostrovsky produced an exclusive report for BBC newsnight on North Korean work camps in Russia.[1] He revisited those camps for Vice News in 2011, and helped produce reports for Vice on the escape of defectors from North Korea.[2] He also made a documentary on Israeli settlements in the West Bank territory of the Palestinian authority.[3] He is a former reporter for Al Jazeera English.[4]

2014 kidnapping

On April 21, 2014, while producing "Russian Roulette," a series of reports for Vice News in eastern Ukraine, Ostrovsky was taken captive in Sloviansk by the militia of the separatist pro-Russian leader, Vyacheslav Ponomarev,[5] on the basis of alleged links to Ukrainian group Right Sector.[6] He was imprisoned for four days, during which he was held in a basement and interrogated. He claimed to be beaten, but the offenders did not leave any lasting damage. He was released on April 24.[7]
