Simon Jon Miotto (born 5 September 1969) is an Australian footballer. He was last contracted to Tranmere Rovers as a goalkeeper, where he was also goalkeeper coach.

Career

Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Miotto was a triple jumper but suffered an injury that led to him playing football as a goalkeeper,[4] beginning his career in 1994 with Riverside Olympic. In 1994 he was signed by Blackpool manager Sam Allardyce. He spent one season at Bloomfield Road before being released without making a first team appearance for the club. In July 1998 he moved to Hartlepool United, for whom he made five appearances in two years.[2]

He joined Scunthorpe United for a brief period in 2000, and then moved to Scotland with Raith Rovers in May 2001.[5] He joined St. Johnstone in February 2003.[6]

West Bromwich Albion (West Brom) manager Gary Megson signed Miotto until the end of the 2003–04 season in March 2004,[7] before being handed a one-year contract at The Hawthorns in July.[8] He was offered a free transfer by West Brom in December,[9] before having his contract cancelled by mutual consent in February 2005.[10] He joined Ølstykke FC in July, leaving the club in June 2006.[11] He moved to Akademisk Boldklub in July, leaving in June 2008 and signing for Køge BK in July.[11] He left Køge in September and signed for Herfølge Boldklub in January 2009, before departing in June.[1][11][12]

He joined Conference Premier team York City on 12 February 2010 as goalkeeper coach, while also registering as a player on 19 February to provide cover for Michael Ingham and Josh Mimms.[13][14] After the end of the 2009–10 season, he entered negotiations with York over a new contract and he left on 2 July after the club were unable to offer him the goalkeeping coach position full-time.[15][16]

Miotto was appointed goalkeeper coach at League One team Tranmere Rovers on 6 August, while also being registered as a player to provide cover for Gunnar Nielsen and Joe Collister.[17] He was an unused substitute eight times in the first half of the season. Miotto left Tranmere on 2 March 2011 to pursue other business interests. Dave Timmins was reappointed as Tranmere's new goalkeeping coach.[18]
