Siddharth Vijay "Sid" Mallya (born 7 May 1987), is the son of Vijay Mallya,[2] the chairman of UB Group (an Indian conglomerate that is primarily in the alcoholic beverages business).[3][4] and the grandson of Vittal Mallya, who was the company's previous chairman.

He has been an online and television host and male model, and is pursuing a career in acting.[5] He registered with the Screen Actors Guild as "Sid Mallya", saying he chose the stage name to try to avoid being typecast in stereotypical roles.[5] He has also worked as director of the IPL cricket team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which is owned by his father, and as a marketing manager for Guinness (a product of Diageo, a large drinks company closely tied to his father's business).

Early life & education

Mallya was born in Los Angeles, California, to Indian businessman Vijay Mallya and former airline hostess Samira Mallya (née Tyabjee).[6] Shortly after his birth, the family moved to England where he was primarily raised. The family also lived part of the time in Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates).[2] At the age of 10, he started boarding school at Papplewick School in Ascot and then went to Wellington College, Berkshire where he passed his GCSEs and A Levels. He then attended Queen Mary University of London where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.[2] While at the university, he also played on its Field Hockey team.[7]

Career

After graduating from university, Mallya spent a year working for drinks giant Diageo, as an assistant brand manager on Guinness.[8] It was widely expected that he would follow in his grandfather and father's footsteps and take over the family business. At the beginning of 2010, he moved to India, and became director of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL cricket team owned by his father.[9][10] While he was at the RCB, the team reached both the IPL and CLT20 finals in the same year.[11] He oversaw the team's "Green Initiatives", which led to RCB claiming to be the world's first carbon-neutral sports team through fan engagement.[12][13]

After appearing on various talk shows as a guest, he launched his own online chat show called No Boundaries at the beginning of 2012.[14] The self-published show was written and hosted by him. On the show he interviewed some notable cricket players, including Chris Gayle, Adam Gilchrist and AB de Villiers. Later that year, he appeared as the lead presenter and judge on the NDTV Good Times show, "The Hunt for The Kingfisher Calendar Girl 2013".[15] He made his ramp modeling debut during Lakme Fashion Week 2012 as the show stopper for designer Komal Sood.[16] He followed this up by walking for designers Shantanu and Nikhil during Indian Bridal Week.[17] In the latter half of 2013, Mallya was selected as one of the 20 to participate in the ABC Talent Showcase, a platform and training program for aspiring talents, out of more than 7000 applicants [5][18][19]

Personal life

He dated Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone for over a year, but the couple broke up in early 2012.[20][21]

Mallya is a running enthusiast, having taken part in two Mumbai Marathons, the London Marathon and the Delhi Half Marathon.[22]

Philanthropy

He has been involved in a number of fund-raising activities for charity. He also serves as an ambassador for the NGO Magic Bus.[23]
