Sid Sriram (born May 19, 1990) is a singer, songwriter and composer.
Musical career
Sid Sriram grew up in California and started learning Carnatic music at the age of three from his mother who ran a Carnatic music school in Northern California. His grandfather was also a Carnatic musician and he also learnt from him.[3] Apart from his grandfather and mother, he started learning from Padma Bhushan awardee P. S. Narayanaswamy in 2003.[3] Sriram had been visiting Chennai in summers to learn since then. He drew inspiration post listening to old school R&B namely Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway when he was in sixth grade and thus, picked up that genre of music. He started attending Berklee in the fall of 2008 and took up music as his profession. Later, he started writing and releasing his original material.[3] In August 2012, he graduated with a degree in Music Production and Engineering Major from Berklee College of Music. He stated that Berklee college played a huge role in shaping his music career. On an academic level, he learnt about vocal techniques and culture. His concentration being more on Music Production and Engineering, he focused more on the technical and creative aspects of making a record.[3]
Recent works
Sid Sriram's music had been featured in Billboard, MTV, Complex Magazine, 2DopeBoyz, The Smoking Section The Source, HypeTrak, Earmilk and The Fader. He collaborated with A.R. Rahman, and Himanshu Suri (Heems) of Das Racist, while having his music promoted by hip-hop taste-makers such as D.Prosper, Karen Civil and Vashtie Kola. His music is influenced by Kanye West, Radiohead, Coldplay, and Stevie Wonder.[3]
On collaboration with A. R. Rahman for the hit track "Adiye" from the chart-busting soundtrack of Kadal, he was quoted saying, "I had sent AR sir a demo via email a while ago. Last year, while I was in Chennai singing Carnatic concerts for the Madras Music Season, one of the engineers from his Chennai studio emailed me asking me to come to the studio. I went to the studio and met AR sir for the first time which was unreal. I sang a little Carnatic and my R&B stuff for him, a few months later he told me about Adiye from Kadal, and we recorded!" The first performance he did with A. R. Rahman was during his Chennai show on December 29, 2013 which was later aired on Jaya TV.[1][3] Sid had gained popularity from his covers of artists like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. In February 2014, Sid Sriram released the video "Sagetron". Sid Sriram is currently working on his album "Insomniac Season" with Grammy award winning producer, DJ Khalil.[4]
