Shujalpur is a city and a municipality in Shajapur district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. City has a great history attached to itself. Ranoji Rao Shinde, father of Mahadji Shinde(Scindia), died in 1745 at Shujalpur, where his cenotaph (chattri) stands which houses a Shiv temple. It is known as Ranoganj.

Shujalpur is located at 23°24′N 76°43′E / 23.4°N 76.72°E It has an average elevation of 448 metres (1469 feet). The city falls in the Malwa region.Two rivers namely, the Nevaj and Jamdad flow through the city.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Shujalpur had a population of 42,465. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shujalpur has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 61%. In Shujalpur, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age. People speak Malvi (a local dialect of Hindi) and Hindi. Shujalpur also has a large population of Maharashtrian people, hence Marathi is also spoken and understood by a large number of people. Shujalpur is legislative assembly constituency. Shujalpur is a tehsil .

History

The city also has a rich political history: First Prime-Minister (as then it was called) of Madhya Bharat late Pandit Liladhar Joshi belonged to this city. The city is also known for its famous temple of god shiva known as jata shankar. Every year, on the occasion of maha shivratri, a fair is organised near the cenotaph of ranoji rao sindhia and in the jatashankar temple. Birthday of sai baba is also celebrated with great joy and happiness.

Shujalpur is considered as the king of rural areas.It is surrounded by more than 50 villages, which are connected via roads so that people can easily move to city for their business and work.People are very simple and heart givers .They respect the customers from the core of their hearts.anaj mandi of shujalpur is very famous for soyabean .Every Sunday in shujalpur mandi and every Thursday in shujalpur city weakly haat/weakly bazaar is organised which is only source of selling and purchasing vegetables and other goods. On the occasion of Diwali a special haat/bazaar is also organised. Shujalpur is also the first Tehsil in the state of Madhya Pradesh having 4-lane Highway in the middle of the city . Two major tourist spot in the city is JataShankar ( located on the bank of river Jamdhad ) and Ranoganj ( located on the bank of river Nevaj ). Both are famous for Shiv Temple and huge crowd are seen on the festival of ShivRatri. Water supply of city is mainly dependent on 3 dams . Jatashankar dam ( built on river Jamdhad ) , Nandasura dam ( built on river Nevaj ) and newly constructed bamanghat dam ( built on river Jamdhad on Jail Road). City has also one Govt PG Collage named JNS (Jawaharlal Nehru Smriti) which is a good point of Education for Science & Arts Student in the near by Rural Area.
