Shishido Domain

The Shishido Domain (宍戸藩 Shishido han) was a han of Japan's Edo period. Located in Hitachi Province (present-day Ibaraki Prefecture), it was ruled for the majority of its history by a branch of the Tokugawa clan of Mito. The domain was confiscated for action in support of the Tengu Party in 1864, but was restored to the family, after the shogunate's fall in 1868. It was disbanded in 1871.

In the han system, Shishido was a political and economic abstraction based on periodic cadastral surveys and projected agricultural yields.[1] In other words, the domain was defined in terms of kokudaka, not land area.[2] This was different from the feudalism of the West.
