The Shiraz Metro is the rapid transit system in Shiraz, the capital city of Fars Province and the largest city in southern Iran. Construction of Shiraz Metro began in 2001 because of traffic problems and high population density. Line 1 opened for service on 11 October 2014.[1]

Lines

Line 1

Construction on Line 1 began in 2001. It will be 22.4-kilometre (13.9 mi) long,[1] running from Gol-e-Sorkh Square near Shiraz International Airport to Ehsan Square in northern Shiraz. There will 20 underground stations, with one station above ground (Chamran Bridge).[1]

The first eight-station, 10.5-kilometre (6.5 mi) section opened on 11 October 2014, and runs between Ehsan on the north side of the city and Namazi in the city centre.[1]

At the 12.5-kilometre (7.8 mi) southern end of Line 1, two separate tunnels with a diameter of 6 metres (20 ft) are being constructed,[1] with the rest built as a double track cut-and-cover tunnel. Between Chamran Bridge and Mirza Koochak Khan Square, the line is at grade. Stations in shallow underground sections have side platforms, while deep-level stations will have island platforms.

Line 2

The 15-kilometre (9.3 mi) Line 2 is currently under construction. It will intersect with Line 1 at Imam Hosein Square.[1]

Line 2 will run to Mian Rood & Aadel Abad via Enghelab Street and Basij Square. There will be two separate 7 m diameter tube tunnels at a depth of 15 m. Among the 10 stations planned there will be 2 surface stations.

Line 3

A five-station, 10-kilometre (6.2 mi) Line 3 is in the planning stages.[1] Lines 4–6 are also being planned.
