The Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental (Chinese: 上海洲际世茂仙境酒店; pinyin: Shànghǎi Zhōujì Shìmào Xiānjìng Jiǔdiàn), or Songjiang Shimao Hotel,[1] is a unique hotel that is currently under construction in Songjiang, China, 30 miles from Shanghai.[2] It is being built on the site of an abandoned quarry and, notably, features some rooms underwater.[1] The hotel is currently in the design stage; though construction has commenced. It is expected to open in 2015.[2]

History

The Intercontinental Hotels Group will run the project as one of its flagship hotels in the country under the banner of Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental. The design was also shortlisted for an award at the World Architecture Festival in 2009.[3] According to Shanghaiist, the Shanghai Shimao Property Group has an investment of US$555 million in the project.[2][4]

Construction

The team for the architectural company, Atkins, comprises Paul Rice, Hu Yali, Zhang Jian and Ding Fang from the Shanghai office and is led by Martin Jochman from the company headquarters in Bristol.[3] They will utilise green roofing, and intend to use the geothermal energy from the artificial lake to generate both electricity and heating.[1][5] The hotel has 19 storeys,[4] 17 of which are below the ground level with two underwater floors; two of the floors are above the 90-100 metre deep quarry.[3][5] The abandoned quarry will be partially filled with water to create an artificial lake. The hotel is designed in an "S" shape utilising a convex to concave form. It also has a separate structure for the lobby that is made to replicate a flying saucer as it would descend into the quarry.[4] The architects' vision is one of sequential hanging gardens that will produce the effect of a green hill extending down the face of the quarry. Both the quarry's rock face and the arced wings of the blocks of guest rooms will surround atria within the hotel. A vertical atrium made of glass will run from the bottom of the hotel to the ground level (above the hotel) disguised as a "waterfall."[3] Gizmag called the waterfall the pièce de résistance of the project.[4]

Facilities

The project would include facilities for extreme sports, a visitor centre and a five-star hotel with some underwater rooms.[1] The hotel has 380[2][4]-400 beds,[3][5] as well as conference rooms for up to 1,000 people, a banquet hall and restaurants and cafes on the ground floor above the hotel.[3] There are two underwater floors, the lowest of which will have a swimming pool and other water sports facilities, with the other rooms and a restaurant, which will face an aquarium with a depth of ten metres.[2][5] Extreme sports such as rock climbing and bungee jumping will be based on a structure which is cantilevered from the rock face.[5]

Pricing

Rooms are expected to be priced at a floor of US$320 per night.[4]
