Shiba Russell is a journalist employed at WNBC-TV in New York City. She currently co-anchors the station's noon and 5pm newscasts on weeknights.

Early Life and education

Russell was born in Boston and grew up in Ocean Township, New Jersey. Shiba discovered her love for news during her senior year of high school when she signed up for a TV production class. She graduated from Ocean Township High School in 1993. After high school, Shiba pursued a BA at the College of New Rochelle with a major in Communication Arts. She graduated in 1997 magna cum laude. In 1998, she graduated from Northwestern University where she earned her Master of Science Degree. While in college, she interned at WCBS-TV and Bronxnet TV.

Career

Russell began her broadcasting career as a Washington DC Correspondent for Medill News Service and filed numerous reports for NY1 and KVIA-TV. In 1999, she joined News 12 the Bronx as weekend evening anchor and reporter. She was one of the first reporters sent to ground zero during the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Russell reported on major events including the police-involved shooting of Amadou Diallo, Little League investigation of the Baby Bronx Bombers and subway pushing victim Edgar Rivera. She also worked as a reporter, photographer, and fill-in announcer at Neighborhood News 12 Long Island (1998-1999).[1]

In 2002, Shiba joined WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh where she was weekend evening anchor and general assignment reporter. She later joined WCVB-TV in Boston where she was weekend morning anchor and weekday reporter. Russell also served as the station's A+ reporter where she reported on high school seniors who overcame incredible odds.

In February 2011, Russell joined WNBC-TV in New York City as weekend evening anchor. She was promoted to 5pm anchor in August 2011. On June 18, 2012, Shiba began anchoring the 11pm newscast with veteran anchor Chuck Scarborough replacing longtime 11pm anchor Sue Simmons. Shiba continues to deliver the 5pm newscasts with Tom Llamas. On January 22nd 2014, WNBC announced that Shiba would co-anchor the noon newscast alongside Rob Schmitt and continue her 5pm anchoring duties. Sibila Vargas would take Shiba's spot on the 11 pm newscasts effective February 3rd 2014.

Russell lives in NYC with her daughter.
