Shewanella is the sole genus included in the Shewanellaceae family of marine bacteria, some species within it were formerly classed as Alteromonas. Shewanella bacteria are a normal component of the surface flora of fish, so are implicated in fish spoilage.[1]

Food Source

Shewanella can gain food by drawing electrons directly from something external with them in using external structures called nano cables that can also be used to put electrons in said object.[2]

Education

Shewanella has become an icon for teaching about microbial electrogenesis and microbial fuel cells. Shewanella has even appeared in a comic book as "Shewy, the Electric Bacterium" in educational kits that are available for students and hobbyists.[3]
