Sheryl Crow is the second album by American singer Sheryl Crow, released on September 1, 1996 in the United Kingdom and September 24, 1996 in the United States. Reaching #6 on the Billboard 200,[1] Sheryl Crow sold 2.4 million units in the United States as of January 2008[2][3] and is certified 3× platinum.[4] On the UK Album Chart, Sheryl Crow reached #5.[5] As of February 2008, it had sold 880,344 copies in the UK and is certified 3× platinum.[6]
The song "Love Is a Good Thing" criticizes Wal-Mart's gun sales policy, with the lyrics "Watch out sister, watch out brother, watch our children while they kill each other with a gun they bought at Wal-Mart discount stores". Wal-Mart banned sales of the album at their stores.[7][8][9]
"Redemption Day" was covered by Johnny Cash; the track appeared on his second posthumous record, American VI: Ain't No Grave.[10]
Critical reception
Sheryl Crow is featured in the Vital Pop: 50 Essential Pop Albums list by Slant magazine. The album also made the Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll at number 26, and Mojo named it the 39th best album of 1996. British magazine Q named Sheryl Crow one of its 90 favorite albums of the 90s. Rolling Stone also selected it as one of the essential albums of that decade in 1999, while naming the self-titled effort the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist in 2002.[17] In 2008, Entertainment Weekly magazine placed the album at number 39 in their list of Top 100 Best Albums of the past 25 years.[18]
